SQU study identifies new compounds with activity against cancer cells
Dr Anwaar Al Maqbali’s team synthesised chiral triazoline compounds that showed promise against cancer cells, fungi and bacteria in early-stage tests.
Dr Anwaar Said Al Maqbali, an assistant professor at Sultan Qaboos University, led a study on a new class of biologically active molecules. The team synthesised a series of chiral triazoline compounds using 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, building in carbohydrate-based components to improve their biological relevance. The work was among the winning papers at the 12th National Research Award.
Selected compounds were tested against 60 cancer cell lines, and some derivatives were highly effective against leukaemia cells. They also showed promising antifungal and antibacterial activity.
These are early-stage laboratory findings that point to possible future drug development; they are not a clinical treatment.
